Los Angeles (WiredPRNews.com) The 18 year-old son of entertainer Marie Osmond has reportedly died after jumping from an apartment building. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), Michael Blosil purportedly left a suicide note prior to his 8th floor jump on Friday.

As noted in the report, officials are investigating the case as they await toxicology test results to determine whether substances were a factor. Los Angeles County Assistant Chief Coroner Ed Winter is quoted by the AP as stating, He fell to his death from a balcony, eight stories however, officials just want to make sure that he wasnt drunk or something and walked out of his balcony and fell.

Winter is further quoted as stating, Is it an accident or is it a suicide? We just want to make sure that theres nothing that we missed.

By several accounts, the region-wide warning effort was a success, though in retrospect evacuations in many places far from the Chilean coast appear to have been excessive given the size of the surge that ultimately arrived.

Initial estimates by state emergency officials in Hawaii reportedly put the size of arriving waves at between six and 10 feet. The waves that did arrive were less than three feet tall.

That apparent disconnect highlights the complexity of tsunami hazard responses, specialists say.
Gauging damage, accuracy

The major warning centers in Hawaii and Alaska issue basin-wide warnings, which include estimated time of arrival for the first of what usually are a series of waves. And they offer a projection of the tsunamis’ heights as they approach a coast but remain in open water.

It’s up to national, state, and local governments, however, to estimate the effects tsunamis can have at specific sites as they come ashore, then issue evacuation orders.

The warning centers in Hawaii and Alaska “did what their mandate called for” and “did a very good job,” says Tad Murty, an adjunct professor specializing in tsunamis at the University of Ottawa in Ontario. The warning center estimated that tsunamis would begin to affect the Hawaiian Islands 15 hours after the magnitude 8.8 quake struck. The forecast was off by 5 minutes, he says.
Tracking difficult

Tsunamis can be tough to track to anyone bobbing on the ocean’s surface. They may represent an increase of eight to 20 inches in the average sea-level height as they pass. That brief change can get lost on a surface already rolling with ranks of large, storm-generated swells stretching as far as the eye can see, or wind-driven waves in a storm.

The answer: pressure-sensitive buoys as deep as 20,000 feet on the ocean floor. Since an earthquake such as Saturday’s displaces water from the sea-floor up, these buoys sense the changes in bottom pressure tsunamis trigger as they propagate from their source.

As tsunamis sweep past chains of undersea volcanoes or similar natural sea-floor barriers, they either can intensify or weaken, depending on the conditions they encounter.

The post mortem is expected to answer the question whether he died of suffocation after deliberately restricting his supply of oxygen.

A BBC spokesman paid tribute and said: “Kristian was a much-loved and talented presenter for BBC Daytime. He brought a real sense of energy and warmth to all the shows he presented for us and will be sorely missed. Our thoughts are with his family at this very difficult time.”

Mr Digby is the third BBC presenter to die unexpectedly in recent years.

The presenter, who was born in Devon to a family of property developers, started his television career hosting Nightlife for ITV.

In 2001, Mr Digby, who was homosexual, presented That Gay Show on BBC Choice.

He went on to front several popular BBC shows, including Double Agents, Living in the Sun, House Swap and Buy it, Sell It, Bank It.

Mr Digby was also a director whose short film, Last Train to Demise, won the Melbourne Film Festival Best Student Film in 1998. Words of Deception won him a junior Bafta in 1997.

Friends and colleagues paid tribute to him.

Dominic Littlewood, who was Mr Digby’s co-presenter on To Buy or Not to Buy, said: “There’s not a bad word I can say about Kristian.

“He was a lovely fun, nice, jolly, decent person.”

His agent and friend Jo Wander said: “I am devastated by the loss. He was a lovely guy and a very talented presenter and director. I will miss him hugely and my thoughts at this time are with his family and his many friends. He will be sorely missed.”

Alistair Appleton, a fellow BBC presenter who is also openly gay, said: “Kristian was a fine, charming, complex, rather dazzling man. TV is duller and straighter and drearier without him. I was proud to have met him, hung out with him, known him a little.

“Its desperately, desperately sad.”

Osmond has a scheduled show in Las Vegas but it is now cancelled because of the death of her son.
